About Ben

BEN GARVIN is a staff multimedia producer and photo editor for the St. Paul Pioneer Press Minnesota. He was named 2011 Journalist of the Year by the Minnesota Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and 2nd place Journalist of Year in 2013. In 2007 he was named Minnesota Photographer of the Year by the Minnesota Press Photographers Association. His regular work on assignment for the New York Times was included in the paper's Pulitzer Prize-winning story on food poisoning in 2010 by Michael Moss. In 2011 Garvin published an award winning photography book called "Ant Farm, Glimpses of Daily Life in Minnesota" collecting the best of his regular photo column for the Pioneer Press. His video work for the documentary multimedia project Black Gold Boom was featured on PBS NewsHour and his footage from the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul was featured in the award-winning PBS documentary "Better This World". Garvin started an award-winning photo blog in 2013 called Flash Garvin. Previously Garvin worked for the Star Tribune in Minneapolis, the Christian Science Monitor in Boston and the Concord Monitor in New Hampshire where was named three-time New Hampshire Photographer of the Year. Garvin grew up in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where he studied creative writing at the University of Arkansas before earning a BFA in Visual Journalism with a minor in philosophy from the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York. He lives in South Minneapolis with his wife Jessica and children Arthur, Lewis, Netta and Bailey.
